Resting on the slopes of Bayfield Hill in NW Wisconsin, the City of Bayfield’s visitors and residents relish the beauty of the natural setting and diverse outdoor experiences on land and water. A central natural feature in Bayfield is “The Big Ravine.” Encompassing 350+ forested acres, this steep watershed and creek have long been protected in a natural state for flood control, habitat preservation, and outdoor recreation. Trails provide great hiking opportunities, both along the creek and upon the forested benches; however, many visitors are unaware of these opportunities and there is no cohesive plan for a sustainably constructed trail network. Social trails along the creek and up the steep erodible slopes are causing resource damage and posing safety risks. The area of greatest concern is the steep hillside behind the Bayfield school, where students have run roughshod for decades; causing significant compaction, vegetation loss, and erosion.

Learn how this project will enhance and expand the year-round outdoor experience for visitors and residents and think about how you can help showcase what is unique about your own area.
